My two week analog challenge

A while back, I did a 30 day challenge to set my alarm and wake up at a specific time every morning rather than rely on the girls waking me up. This really did prove to be a challenge because the girls more often than not would wake up before 6:00 a.m. In the last week or so, I’ve noticed they have started sleeping in and so I thought I would give this challenge another go – with a new twist.

For 14 days (Gah – 30 was too intimidating!) I plan to dock my phone in the kitchen and use an old-school alarm to wake up in the morning. Here’s why:

  1. I’m tired. I know it’s annoying to complain about being tired because everyone is tired just like everyone is busy. But I’m tired of being tired and I want to try and do something about it. Looking at screens before bedtime hinders productive sleep. (So do toddlers.) So no more of that at least 30 minutes before bedtime – screens that is. The toddlers are here to stay.
  2. Old habits die hard. Having spent so many years on my laptop in bed, catching up from the day or prepping for the next, it’s what I know. I need to create a new, healthier bedtime routine.
  3. I also need to create a healthier morning routine, too. After sobbing in bed one morning a couple weeks ago, I realized, reading the news on my phone is not the best way to start my day. While it’s important to stay informed and develop intelligent opinions, I have learned I should probably have coffee first.
  4. I think I’m addicted to my phone.

This is the little analog clock I bought on Amazon and tried it out for the first time last night. The clock is silent (no ticking!) and the alarm itself is ascending, which is kinda nice. So far, I’m liking this new addition to my nightstand. That said, I’m nervous to relocate my phone.

Pretty much everyone I know (including Jim) keeps their phone on their nightstand. I plan to keep our house phone within reach in case of emergencies. But still, the thought of deliberately leaving my iPhone in the kitchen all night is daunting. Would you try it?

Wish me luck.

  2. I need to do this too. For all the same reasons. Starting my day with all the negativity of Facebook and the news is horrible! And I think I’m giving myself some sort of neck and shoulder problem from using my phone in bed. But I’m scared to do it, too. How are you doing so far???
